Mariam Majid is an award-winning writer and director. She earned a Distinction in both her Bachelors of Fine Art and Masters of Filmmaking; and was awarded the Filmmaking Prize for her Postgraduate degree. She started her company, Wagging Tongues Productions in 2016 as a springboard for projects to encourage the British Asian diaspora’s engagement with the arts.
Majid’s short film, A Night with Noorjehan, won awards at the BAFTA qualifying Leeds International Film Festival amongst others. As a visual artist, Majid was selected to curate and design an installation at the London Design Biennale 2018, Somerset House. Titled ‘The Courtyard’, the Pavilion was named one of top ten installations at the exhibition in prestigious publications such as Elle Decor and ArchDaily.
She also wrote, produced and directed three theatre plays, the ‘Jungly Jadoogar’ series. Staged as part of the Alchemy Festival at Southbank Centre and the Muslim Lifestyle Show at London Olympia, the plays, based on South Asian folktales, challenged gender and cultural stereotypes.
Majid has also worked on numerous factual films for the British Council, Kingston University and Stanley Picker Gallery. She is also Head of Fiction Programming for the BIFA qualifying London Breeze Film Festival and a member of w.in.c (women independent collective), a group of female filmmakers from around the globe focused on collaborative non-hierarchical filmmaking.
Currently, Majid is producing her feature film script with a BAFTA nominated producer.
